5 Tips To Maintain a Healthy Weight

Happy Sunday!

This morning after church my sister and I were watching Super Soul Sundays on OWN. I love this show so much. Its so inspiring! It actually inspired me to make this post! A healthy body,  mind and spirit is what most people want. The body is the vessel that we (ourselves)  have most direct control control over. We have the power to manipulate it and we do. Whether it be strengthening it or weakening it we have the power to change it everyday.

By no means am I a health & wellness coach. But I do have a passion for it. Since I was a child I have been very active and athletic. From dancing, to track, to competitive cheerleading and cheering in college I have been able to maintain my ideal weight (according to a stand BMI chart) from 19 to me now being 28 years old. I've never been underweight or obese. Some say its genetics. Do genetics play a part in heath? Of course! We have tons of studies that prove this but each person has the power to break cycles of obesity and unhealthy lifestyles of their families.

Here I have 5 Tips To Maintain a Healthy Weight

Most of these tips are well known and kind of like duh! But that is what tips are. They are reminders! Everyone needs reminders every now and then to help us stay on the right track.

1. Exercise: This is MUST! We have to exercise to burn calories and strengthen our bodies. The older we get the slower our metabolism works. This means that we have to burn calories in order to prevent weight gain. I typically try to exercise 3 days a week. Keep a routine is best because lets face it the gym isn't always fun. Taking zumba, yoga or having a partner is a good way to make it more fun.

2. Never skip breakfast: It is a fact that people who skip breakfast tend have have higher BMIs than people who eat breakfast. Breakfast kick starts your metabolism and gives you energy throughout your morning. People who skip breakfast often get so hungry they tend to eat more at lunch or dinner. Or they become so desperate for a mid morning snack that they make poor decisions in picking a snack to curve their hunger before lunch.

3. Portion control: Today portions at restaurants are just huge! Take bagels, for example: 20 years ago, the average bagel had a 3 inch diameter and was 140 calories. Today, bagels often have a 6 inch diameter and are 350 calories! Its obvious at people who consistenly overeat will become overweight.  I know ain't nobody got time to be counting calories but when your snacking just look at the serving size and follow it. When you are full simply stop eating! Save the leftovers for the next day. Also check out ChooseMyPlate.gov they offer guidelines on how much you should eat based on your age, gender and what not.

4. Drink WATER: This is one tip I need to work on! Drinking plenty of water just simply helps our bodies function better. Every time you drink a juice or a side match it with the same amount of water!

5. Choose wisely: Be intentional about what you put into your body. A lot of times we get so busy with things of life we simply forget to eat. We don't plan ahead and we find ourselves so hungry we just grab a bag of chips or candy or  we stop by a fast food restaurant and guzzle down some trash without even really thinking about how it can negatively affect us.

I love this energy balance concept and I think this can help me us work towards a healthy mind, body and spirit!

Energy balance is important for maintaining a healthy weight. The amount of energy or calories you get from food and drinks (energy IN) is balanced with the energy your body uses for things like breathing, digesting, and being physically active (energy OUT):
  • The same amount of energy IN and energy OUT over time = weight stays the same (energy balance)
  • More energy IN than OUT over time = weight gain 
  • More energy OUT than IN over time = weight loss 
To maintain a healthy weight, your energy IN and OUT don’t have to balance exactly every day. It’s the balance over time that helps you maintain a healthy weight.

My Favorite Body Butters

Hello out there!

Its been a while since I've made a blog post. No excuses, I've just be kind of lazy with my blog this past month. I was cleaning out my bathroom cabinets and it kind of inspired me to do a post on my favorite body butters.

I'm obsessed with body butters. Regular lotion just does not cut it for me. I like to pretty much smother my body in body butter at night after my shower. I take a shower every single night and I like for my skin to be extremely moisturized after.

Body butters are a lot richer than regular lotions. They typically have moisture rich ingredients like shea butter in them that penetrate the skin and keep it moisturized for longer period of time.

Here are my all time favorite body butters y'all! If you try them you WILL NOT be disappointed.


Absolutely love all of these! 
1. Kiehls Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter
Out of the bunch this has to be my favorite! 

Sometimes you can catch it on sale when the holidays roll around. Great to give as a git too!
-Price: This baby runs about $39 at Nordstrom. I know you're thinking "$39 for a body butter, this chic is out of her mind"! But it really is amazing and it last a pretty long time too!
-Scent: The smell is great as well. It has a very mild scent. It mostly smells of honey. My fiancé loves the smell of it and I do too. You can spray a body mist over after applying it and it will not mix or distract from the body mist scent at all. 
-Texture: As the name mentions this has a unique whipped consistency. It lovely! It light weight but when you massage it into the skin it still leaves it silky with a slight sheen. 

2. Pacifica Blood Orange Body Butter
This one I love just for it scent alone!

Pacifica also makes this scent in a roller ball perfume & tinted lip balm.
-Price: This body butter runs anywhere from $5.00 to $10.00 depending on what size you get you get. This is the largest size. I bought this from Target but you can find it at Ulta as well.
-Scent: OMG! This smells awesome y'all! It has a very potent smell. When I wear this all over I get so many complements. I do not recommend wearing this with perfume because the smell is so unique and fragrant I doubt it will mix well with  other scents. 
-Texture: This body butter is very thick in consistency but it also smooths over the skin with ease leaving a nice sheen as well. 

3. The Body Shop Mango Body Butter
The Body Shop got it right when they made their body butters.

They have tons of different fragrances in their body butter but Mango is my fav.


-Price: This size body butter is about $12.00 at The Body Shop. Ultra also sells these at about the same price. They also come in a smaller and larger size too!
-Scent: The Mango Body Butter smells delicious! It reminds me of a mango smoothie! It pretty much just smells like  delicious sweet ripe mango! 
-Texture: This has a very smooth and thick texture! Out of all these this one leaves the skin with most shine after massaging it in. 

4. C. Booth Egyptian Argan Oil & Honey Almond Body Butter


  These are awesome! I get them on sale sometimes at Rite Aid for about $6.00. The Honey Almond one is my favorite! It has a naturally sweet smell and great smooth thick consistency. The Egyptian Argan Oil has bit of a older perfume like smell.
Both do a great job of making the skin soft and moisturized!

Pantry & Refrigerator Organization

Hello Everyone!

As you all may know I am a youtube fanatic! I pretty much go there first for inspiration, how to's, DIYs, pretty much everything! Anything that I'm curious about I go to youtube first. This is where I got inspired to organized my fridge and pantry.

I love to cook. Sometimes I find that I have to end up throwing out produce because I forget I have it or what recipe I bought it for and it ends up going bad. Tragic I know! I am not one for wasting stuff, especially food. I also found that we had accumulated a lot of condiments. Things that were just plain old or that we used once and haven't used again in months.

There is a woman on youtube that has a whole channel dedicated to home decor, organization and maintenance. I discovered her channel about a year ago and I'm def hooked! Her channel name is At Home with Nikki and the video I re-watched that really got me motivated is linked here.

I used 3 items that Nikki recommended from that video that I found on Amazon. I love how it came out. Here is the fridge before and after!

 

On the top tow shelves I keep most of our taller drinks and items we reach for the most. 

The 4 small glass containers can be found here. I am obsessed with reading product reviews. (Another reason why I love youtube lol.) On amazon lots of reviews for this product say that the lids to these containers do not tightly seal. I agree. But these are still really good for storing fruit that you may use or eat at home. Do not try to throw them in a lunch box because liquids will spill out.
 When I buy fruit, as soon as I get it home, I wash it cut it and put it in these containers and freeze the rest. This is awesome because its already clean and ready to eat and decreases on the clutter in the fridge. The container for the OJ I bought from Wal-Mart. I believe it was less than $5.00. I intentionally left space on this top shelf for lunch boxes. 

On the second shelve I also put things we use most frequently. Eggs and snacks! The egg container is from Wal-Mart as well. It was also less than $5.00. I purchased the tupperware from Target. It came in a set with 5 different tupperware sizes. In here I have carrots and strawberries. These are washed and ready to eat. Easy preparation so they can be thrown in a lunch box at the last minute.


On the third shelf I have bread and more fruit. We normally buy two loafs of bread. One we keep in the bread basket and the other in the fridge to preserve it until we are ready to eat it. To the right I have a fruit chute that can be purchased here. I am not fond of apples but my fiancé loves them. He prefers them cold too so I thought this would be great. In our fridge we also have a built in drawers. Here is where we keep our lunch meats, cheeses, and cookies. 


Below I have this container that is considered a fridge organizer that I again purchased at Wal-Mart. I was nervous about it but it was a perfect fit! Here I put a few yogurts, butter, lemons wedges, heavy whipping cream and half and half. These are just things that you would normally get pushed to the back of the fridge. Those items you forget you have. This container comes out and can easily be moved around as well.
                               

In the bottom two built in drawers I keep fresh produce and drinks that are individually bottled.


Here is an image of the pantry after I organized it. Honestly it is not that appealing to the eye but it is much better. Two best recommendations for a pantry is to keep the things your use most frequently up close. We also dedicate the top shelve to quick breakfast items like cereal, bars and oatmeal. The basket and small drawers are good for loose snacks like tuna or pop-tarts. In the drawers I keep packets of seasoning, candy or anything else that is small in size and random lol.

I am so happy that I did this y'all! I did this about a week ago and it has been very easy to maintain. Today I went to the farmers market to refill on some fruit. Washed the little containers and filled them up. This week is a busy week for us so its good to know that figuring out lunch and healthy snacks won't be a headache. Just open up the fridge and go! Save-The-Date Party Recap

Hi Everyone!

 My fiancé and I are getting married on 9/3/16!
We are having a destination wedding in Montego Bay, Jamaica! I absolutely cannot wait. I've never really been one of those girls that dreamed about their wedding day. I mean, yes I had a wedding inspiration board on pinterest, but I wasn't daydreaming about the day as a little girl or saving up my allowance for it. The thought of planning a wedding and being the center of attention for an entire day kind of makes me anxious. I'm the type of person that loves for everyone to have a good time. So being responsible for so many peoples "good time" really stresses me out.

My fiancé and I had dated for over a year. We had met and hung out with one another's families several times but our families had never met one another. Kinda odd I know, but when your families live three and a half hours away it is kind of difficult with everyones busy schedules. For this reason we decided to have a save-the-date engagement party so that our families could finally meet and hangout.

I was very nervous initially but honestly the day could not have gone better! My sister and I had even made games to break the ice. We made a family bingo game boards and tickets for the forbidden word game but we didn't end up playing either. Everyone was eating and talking and laughing we really didn't see the need to play them.

Of course at the party we gave out our save-the-dates. We were extremely proud of these! They came out exactly like we wanted them to. The lady that helped us design them has a company called Atheneum Creative. I found her on pinterest, sent her an email and I could not believe that she actually lived in Charlotte! We met up a couple times at Dean & Deluca to go over the details and she provided us with luggage tags, boxes, filler and stamps. She offered to put our save-the-dates together for a fee. To cut cost we declined and did it ourselves. It was very tedious and time consuming but also really fun!

 We also incorporated one engagement picture in each save-the-date box. Our engagement photos were taken way back in April. We wanted them to be taken at the beach to keep with the destination wedding theme. I emailed a photographer I knew from college. His company is called Jaxonphotogroup and he is based out of Atlanta, Georgia. He's amazing. So we drove down to Hilton Head, SC  where Jack and his makeup artist Ashley Gray met us for the shoot. We kind of make a mini vacation out of it and stayed at a little condo walking distance from this natural beach. My fiancé found the condo on a website called Home Away. This is a site where people rent out their property to vacationers. It was so convenient!  The photos only took about 3 hours and we had 3 outfit changes!  It was kind of chilly and windy but it was really really fun and I was so pleased with the images.

 To avoid the headache of having to prepare food we decided to get a few items catered. We used a company called Your Catering Company! They were so professional and nice!  We wanted to incorporate the Jamaica theme while still keeping the food easy and casual. My dad made a few hotdogs on the grill too.

Yummy Healthy Snacks

Hey y'all!

I just wanted to share 2 yummy snack ideas with you and some snacking tips! You can't stay snatched without your snacks! Lol

3 Healthy Snack Commandments
1. Thy must be low in calories
2. Thy shall be under 5 minutes to prepare
3. Thy shall be really really delicious

Snack Option 1:
 Smoothie Bowl

This smoothie bowl is so good! Its cold, filling and good for you too. It is kind of like a spin off of a Sweet Frog frozen ice cream treat. If you search smoothie bowl on youtube you will find a ton of videos on different flavor combos. This one is my favorite!

Ingredients
- Silk Almond Milk (original)
-Almond Butter (we like the Justin's brand the best but it is always sold out)
-Dates (completely obsessed with these things)
-Ripe Organic Bananas (frozen is better for thick consistency)
-Blueberries
-Chia seeds (can be bought for cheaper at Home Goods or Marshall's


I found these big container of dates at the International Market for $10 such a good buy for the qty!



Preparation is really easy.
You basically just throw the frozen banana, 1 cup of almond milk, 2 big tablespoonfuls of almond butter and about 5 to 6 dates in a high speed blender.  The more dates you use the sweeter your smoothie will be. If you don't have frozen banana ready just throw some ice cubes in to make it as thick or thin as you like.

After everything is smooth and blended just pour it into a bowl. This actually makes enough for 2. then top with your favorite toppings. I used sliced almonds, blueberries, chia seeds and coconut shavings.

My fiancé and I ate this after a workout one day! Good source of protein and very filling! 
Snack Option 2: 
3 Bean and Corn Salad

This salad is very easy to make. I stole this recipe from Amber Fillerup Clark. She is a blogger and youtuber with the most adorable family! We kept this salad in our fridge for  like a week and I would always eat off of it for a snack. Really healthy and really tasty too! 

Ingredients
- 1 can of sweet corn
-1 can of garbanzo beans
-1 can of kidney beans
-1 can of green beans
-Balsamic Vinegar
-Champagne Dressing



The champagne dressing may be a little hard to find. I bought mine from Publix.

Preparation again is super quick and easy!

Step 1: Open bean and corn cans and drain and clean them with water. 


Step 2: Pour every thing into a big bowl and give it a quick mix.
Step 3: Add 1/2 cup of the champagne dressing and balsamic vinegar to taste. Toss well.

Step 4: Enjoy whenever you need a snack and you don't have to feel guilty when eating it! lol

I am the type of person that eats a snack between every meal. Eating snacks has been proven to increase metabolism and keep your energy level high. In my opinion it also prevents over eating because you don't feel as hungry at dinner. Dinner is a time when most people lose sight of portion control and eat and eat and eat even when they no longer feel hungry. Snacking is definitly strategic. I learned from my Vegan Challenge Fail that lack of strategy will have you eating mess you know you don't need.

Smart Snacking Strategies

-Prepare healthy snacks in advance 

-Keep healthy snack on you: keep a bar, banana, baby carrots or something in your purse if you know you have a busy day and of course take it to work with you if you work long hours like me. 

-Make it interesting: look at blogs, food network, youtube, pinterest! you can find non-boring cost effective snacks, trust me!

-Satisfy cravings with healthier approaches: drink hot chocolate instead of eating a chocolate bar, eat dates and figs instead of candy. Satisfy salt cravings with pretzels instead of chips. Use salsa instead of sour cream.

Vegan Challenge Fail

Hello Everyone!

I am sure you may have already guessed it but the 7 Day Vegan Challenge did not go over so well. Day 5 is were it all fell apart. I think it went left mostly due to lack of planning on my part.

So Day 5 started out pretty good. I had my typical oatmeal in morning. Apple sauce for a snack and then ate a late lunch around 3pm of vegetable lo mien from a local Chinese restaurant by my house. Day 5 was Friday. This also happened to be one of my friends birthday as well. I promised her I would go out to celebrate that night with her and her friends and family. The plan was go to to this cute bar/restaurant/lounge here in Charlotte around 9pm.

The lo mien from earlier had me pretty full. I started to get a little hungry around 6:30pm so made a smoothie and started to get ready for the birthday festivities.

Of course we get to the lounge and the reservation was not ready so we walk over to a bar across the street and have a drink while we wait. About a hour later we finally go back to the lounge. By this time it was around 10pm. I was so hungry y'all. The lounge had absolutely no vegan options. So I broke down and got a margherita pizza. I posted a pic on my snapchat but forgot to save it. I'm not sure if was really delicious or if I was just so tipsy an hungry I couldn't tell.

What I learned most from this failed challenge is that preparation is everything. Eating a vegan diet was challenging for me. Vegetarian I can totally do because I was vegetarian for about a year in college. So removing meat from my diet doesn't scare me at all. It is the cheese and butter that seem to be the most difficult to cut out.

 It made me more aware of what I put into my body which was pretty eye opening.

Day #3: 7 Day Vegan Challenge

Hey!

So here goes long day #3. I'm being dramatic. Lol

Breakfast:

I actually woke up on time this morning. I can barely believe it myself. Today I had my normal oatmeal with fruit for breakfast. Nothing too exciting. I am a creature of habit so I actually like eating my favorite things everyday. Weird, I know. This is the same exact oatmeal recipe from Day #1 I just switched out the banana for strawberries. I also had the Honey Lavender Yogi tea on the way to work too. I really love that tea.

Mid Morning Snack:

Like clock work I start to get hungry around 11:30am. So this morning before I made my oatmeal I threw some stuff in the Vitamix and made a really delicious green smoothie.

Ingredients
-coconut juice
-2 handfuls of baby spinach
-1 frozen banana
-1/2 cucumber skin removed
-1 yellow mango
-5 pineapple chunks
-ice



Lunch:

I take my lunch break at 2pm. It is really the only designated time I get to sit down for 30 minutes without answering a phone or answering a question so I try to eat a big lunch. I always bring my lunch. Today I brought 4 left over veggie rolls from last nights dinner. With the magical sauce. 

Mid Afternoon Snack:

Around 4:00pm I had a snack. I found this cashew bar things at the asian supermarket that I get my rice paper from. Omg y'all, they are so good. Only strange thing about them is that they come small an individually wrapped. So I brought and ate 4 because I felt that was like the equivalent to the size of a Special K bar. 



Dinner:

Whenever we are kind of slow at work I want to snack on stuff. I work at Rite Aid so I'm surrounded by candy and junk food that is why I always, always, always have healthy snacks on deck. So around 7 pm I had a white nectarine and a raspberry soy yogurt. Now about this soy yogurt...honestly y'all its not the best. I usually get the coconut milk yogurts but the soy was on sale at Whole Foods so I bought them. It I did eat the whole cup just because I am not one to waste food. The more I ate it the better it got but it still was not as good at the coconut milk yogurt.

Late Night Snack:

I get home from work around 9:15 pm by the time I unwind and shower it is 10:00pm and I am always hungry. So tonight I made some avocado toast. I put some herb salt, pepper and red pepper flakes on top. I love this for late night snacks because its healthy and you don't feel bad going to bed with it on your stomach. 



I'm kind of tired now. And I typed this super fast so please excuse spelling and punctuation. Tomorrow one of my girlfriends from college invited me to come celebrate her birthday so day 4 may be delayed.

7 Day Vegan Challenge: Day #2

Hey y'all,

Today is day 2 of my 7 Day Vegan Challenge.

Breakfast:
This morning I met up with one of my friends for breakfast at around 9:30am. We went to this cool spot here called Zada Janes.

Honestly I was kind of bummed about doing this vegan challenge because this place is known for their biscuits, pancakes and french toast. I ended up getting a chai tea latte with soy milk and one of their vegan breakfast scrambles called The East-Western. It was a tofu scramble with peas, mushroom, onion and curry seasoning. It did not look very appetizing at all but it had great flavor and was very filling. 

Mid morning treat:

After breakfast I ran to the farmers market to get some things for dinner and made a return at ultra. After this I was kinda thirsty so I stopped at Starbucks and got a grande passion tea with regular sweeter and one pump of raspberry. I heard a beauty youtuber talking about this so I decided to try it and it was soooo good!

Lunch: 

At around 1:45pm I started getting a little hungry. Since I have the chic pea salad mixture left over from yesterday I just made me a sandwich with that. It still tasted as delicious as it did the day before and I still have some left for one more sandwich. I know some people are funny about eating leftovers but clearly I'm not. I grew up eating leftovers so its never been a big deal to me. Last night I cut up some strawberries and made some blueberry and strawberry ice cubes. I like to add these to water just to help give it a little hint of flavor. Oh, and excuse my paper plate too. Lol

Dinner: 

At 5:30 I started making dinner. My fiancé had a business meeting at 7:00pm so I knew we needed to be eating by 6:15 at the latest. For dinner I made 3 things. Roasted sweet potato, roasted asparagus and veggie rice paper rolls. I'm obsessed with roasted sweet potato. I could legit eat them every day! This is the only way I make them now.

Roasted Sweet Potato

Ingredients: 
- 2 organic sweet potato
- about 3 tbsp of liquified coconut oil
-cinnamon and brown sugar mix
-salt
-dry thyme flakes



Preparation:
1. Preheat oven to 400
2. Line cookie sheet tray with aluminum foil
3. Skin and cut sweet potato into thin rounds
4. Lay potato rounds flat on sheet evenly
5. Drizzle potato with coconut oil
6. Spinkle on seasonings
7. Bake for about 15 min and enjoy


Roasted Aspragus

Ingredients:
-asparagus
-olive oil
-salt
-pepper
-nutritional yeast flakes



Preparation:
1. Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil
2. Chop off ends of asparagus and throw them away
3. Wash asparagus well
4. Lay a thin layer on cookie sheet
5. Drizzle with olive oil
6. Season with salt and pepper
7. Spinkle on nutritional yeast flakes
8. Bake for about 15 min and enjoy

Veggie Rice Paper Rolls

These veggies rolls are similar to the shrimp rice paper rolls from one of my previous post. I love these things! I basically just did the same thing but added in a bunch of veggies. I also used the same delicious dipping sauce. 

Ingredients:
-carrots
-cucumber
-lettuce
-red bell pepper
-mango
-sweet basil



Preparation:
1. Clean and cut up veggies into long strips
2. Take rice paper and dip in warm water for 30 seconds
3. Assemble rolls and enjoy!


Dinner was soooooo good y'all! My fiancé, who is not doing the 7 Day Vegan Challenge with me, even loved dinner too! The sauce for the rice paper rolls is EVERYTHING! 


Tomorrow and Thursday may be bit harder, seeing as though I will be at work all day both days. Wish me luck!
